We'd love to introduce you to Victoria Coker, she is the true definition of a #GirlBoss. When something you want isn't in the market yet, you might as well build a market for it yourself 💁🏾! And that's exactly what Victoria did. We don't want to spoil to much of the deets of the blog but let's just say Victoria created a streaming platform that features series created by black media makers. Victoria is dedicated to empowering the black community. Read all about how she did it on our new #GirlbossSpotlight Blog.

Chelsea Satine:

What was the inspiration and intention behind creating ColoredContent?

Victoria Coker:

I cut-off my cable and it was extremely difficult to find quality shows by Black filmmakers. I decided I wanted to change that so I started ColoredContent. My goal was to easily provide access to narratives and stories created by Black creatives.

CS:

What was the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from a mentor or friend you admire?

VC:

Best advice is you can’t do it alone. You can start alone but along the way you have to build a team or community and they help you continue to grow.

CS:

If you could share 3 gems or words to live by with aspiring content creators and creatives what would they be?

VC:

Follow your gut. We as humans pattern match and sometimes we already know when something is right or wrong from experience. Don’t give up would be my second gem. Being an entrepreneur is hard so you need to stay encouraged. My third tip is do research. In any industry you need to know what is trending and how the market is changing.

CS:

Who is the most influential woman in your life and how did they contribute to the shaping of ColoredContent?

VC:

It sounds cliché but the most inspirational woman in my life is my mom. My mom passed over a decade an ago but the things she instilled in me as a person keeps me going. She raised me as a single mom and struggled to ensure that I have best. She made me value myself and always encouraged me to follow my dreams.  She taught me to keep going when I have weak moments.

CS:

What kinds of content do you see lacking in black entertainment and news?

VC:

I think Black entertainment is now getting more sci-fi content but in the past there wasn’t as much representation. Before Black Panther we had Meteor Man. We can be superheroes too and I am glad we now are seeing this now.

CS:

How do you stay up to date with what is happening in the news and media without feeling overwhelmed? What do you do to stay balanced, clear headed and up-to-date?

VC:

I definitely pray, that helps. I also take time to be alone. I think so many people never have time to think or get to know themselves. I know when I take time to myself I can think clearly.

CS:

When it comes to film and entertainment what genre do you gravitate towards?

VC:

I love sci-fi. I also enjoy a good romantic comedy.

CS:

What do you find most appealing in a fragrance?

VC:

For me I like a sweet smell that last. I don’t want to carry around perfume all day.

CS:

What do you enjoy the most about the Yours, Fragrance Perfume?

VC:

I have sensitive skin and I have used perfume in the past and had an allergic reaction. So aside from the scent I’m happy it’s safe for me to wear.
